How to Attract More Volunteers
In a world where time is the new currency, getting people to commit their precious hours to your cause can be tricky. But with the right approach, you can build a loyal volunteer base that’s just as passionate as you are.
Here’s how:
1. Make It Easy (and Fun!)
Nobody wants to wade through endless paperwork or overly complicated processes just to lend a hand. Streamline your volunteer sign-up process. Keep it quick, simple, and digital. And don’t forget to inject some fun into it! Volunteering shouldn’t feel like a chore—it should feel like an exciting opportunity to contribute to something meaningful.
Consider offering flexible shifts, short-term opportunities, or even “micro-volunteering” where people can contribute in bite-sized tasks that fit their schedules. We did this when I was the President at our local Public School. We made early shifts in the canteen so working parents could drop by and put labels on the lunch bags or try and use the apple spiral. When people know that helping out won’t take over their entire weekend, they’re more likely to raise their hand.
2. Tell Your Story
People are drawn to stories, not statistics. So, rather than just telling potential volunteers about what your organisation does, show them why it matters. Who are you helping? What impact are you making in the community?
Share stories of the people you’ve touched, and the real change your organisation brings. Better yet, let your existing volunteers be the storytellers. Personal experiences and genuine testimonials from those already on board can go a long way in inspiring others to join.
At our 2023 Gold Lunch we had a beautiful young lady who had been a recipient of a cancer trial drug when she was at primary school come with 30 of her friends to volunteer at lunch. Her Dad told her story (there was not a dry eye in the house) but having her in the room, illustrated to the guests how real and how close the story can get and how important it is to contribute so there are more success stories like hers.
3. Appeal to Their Passions
People want to feel like they’re making a difference—so show them how their time and skills can have a real impact. Whether it’s coaching kids, helping with events, or using their professional expertise in marketing or finance, find out what your potential volunteers are passionate about and let them know how they can make a difference in those areas. The local Rugby Clubs are a great example of this.
I have been involved with Mosman Junior Rugby for the last 10 years – first as a Manager of an U6 team, then they got me to do the Age Group Coordinator Role for 2 years, then a friend and I did Events and now I run The Summer Touch Competition for them. The community sucked me in and I’ve stayed because it’s been fun and I can use my skills and passions.
Matching volunteers with roles that align with their interests and skills not only keeps them engaged but also helps them feel a deeper connection to your cause.
4. Build a Sense of Community
Volunteers aren’t just looking for a way to give back—they want to feel part of something bigger. Create a strong community within your organisation by offering regular meet-ups, social events, or training sessions. Make your volunteers feel valued and appreciated.
When people feel like they belong, they’ll stick around longer. A supportive, inclusive environment goes a long way in keeping your volunteers motivated and excited to be part of your mission. Just go for a Parkrun and you’ll see why people volunteer for them.
5. Offer Growth Opportunities
Volunteering shouldn’t be a one-way street. While volunteers are helping you, they’re also looking to grow personally and professionally. Offer them opportunities to learn new skills, gain experience, or network within their community.
Think about providing training sessions, leadership roles, or certificates of recognition. When people see that volunteering with your organisation can also benefit them, they’ll be more likely to get involved—and stay involved.
6. Get the Word Out
You might have the best cause in the world, but if no one knows about it, your volunteer numbers will stay flat. Spread the word through local media, social media, email newsletters, and partnerships with other community groups or schools. Word-of-mouth is powerful too—ask your current volunteers to refer their friends and family.
Make your volunteer opportunities visible, exciting, and everywhere people are already looking.
7. Say “Thank You” (Often!)
Volunteers are giving up their time for free, and a simple “thank you” can go a long way. Recognise their efforts publicly—whether that’s through shout-outs on social media, thank-you events, or even just a handwritten note. One of my Advertising bosses, Marty Kellard always did this. I did 200 of these recently and it actually felt as nice to write them and I’m hoping it did to receive them. Show people that their contributions are noticed and valued. When volunteers feel appreciated, they’ll keep coming back—and they’ll bring their friends!
Attracting volunteers isn’t rocket science, but it does take a thoughtful, engaging approach. By making it easy, fun, and rewarding to get involved, you’ll be able to build a dedicated team of volunteers who are just as passionate about your cause as you are.
